SASL authentication problem: unable to open Berkeley db /etc/sasldb2: Permission denied

Posted on June 02, 2013

When dealing with Postfix on Linux systems, you may have the misfortune of seeing this message in your log files:

postfix/smtpd[4071]: warning: unknown[88.157.58.226]: SASL PLAIN authentication failed: authentication failure
postfix/smtpd[4071]: warning: SASL authentication problem: unable to open Berkeley db /etc/sasldb2: Permission denied

Luckily, the solution isn't the difficult. Locate your smtpd.conf file, problably: /etc/postfix/sasl/smtpd.conf

#Change from
smtpd_sasl_path = /etc/postfix/sasl:/usr/lib/sasl2
#To:
smtpd_sasl_path = smtpd

Enjoy!
